Film Musicals and Escape from the Everyday

The movie musical is back! Inspired by the popularity of Wicked and Moana 2 in theaters, we will explore how film musicals offer opportunities for escape from the ordinary. Using examples from movie musicals like Singin’ in the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis, and La La Land, we will think through how film musicals offer feelings of utopia to audiences by breaking from the rules of everyday life.
