Artistic Liberation: Female Abstract Expressionists
July 31 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm
$35Five women artists dared to enter the male-dominated world of abstract painting – not as muses or models, but as artists. They contended with the sexism of both the age and the art world and produced a body of remarkable and powerful art. Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, and Joan Mitchell stand out as the great women who modernized the art world in post-World War II America. These impassioned, wild, and sometimes tragic women pushed open the art world door for themselves and for women who would follow in their footsteps. In this course you’ll meet the women who changed American art and society, tearing up the prevailing social code and replacing it with a doctrine of liberation. [1 of 2 sessions]
